I was walking home on a Saturday night after doing some work at a cafe down the street–one of those suburban summer nights where the air is still but cool, and everything is peaceful. It was late enough that the windows in most of the houses were dark, and it seemed everyone was sleeping or else out and about in livelier parts of the Greater Boston area. But then I saw it out of the corner of my eye in a house across the road–the outline of arms waving against the warm, dim glow of a living room wall. And then the sound of one of those songs meant for summertime floated out toward me from the open windows. I stood there for a moment, wondering what would happen if I walked up to the front door and rang the bell. I imagined they would usher me in without hesitation, understanding that all I wanted was to be in the room and waving my arms too. Of course, that isn’t how things unfold in real life, so I didn’t. But you know, there is also something beautiful about catching a glimpse of a Saturday night you don’t belong to. In a way, it belongs more to you than to anyone else.
